Interviewed for the Omni Press publication 'Extreme Metal 2' by Joel McIver. Answered by Xaphan

What are your favourite extreme metal bands and why?

Venom, Destruction, Possessed, Sodom, Hellhammer/Celtic Frost, (early) Slayer, Exodus (BbB), Mercyful Fate, Onslaught, Beherit, Darkthrone, Impaled Nazarene, Gorgoroth, (early) Mayhem, Blasphemy, Profanatica, Bathory, Virus, Kreator, Bloodfeast, Voi Vod, (early) Metallica, Hobb’s Angel of Death, Acheron, Unleashed, Bestial Warlust, (early) Marduk, Hypocrisy, Infestdead, Abigor, old Deicide, Pungent Stench, Morbid, Angel Corpse, Behemoth, (early) Morbid Angel, Havohej, (early) Emperor, Black Funeral, Von and many more. I could fill up pages with these. All of the mentioned bands have been inspirational to me and remain some of my favorites because upon first hearing each one I was immediately drawn into their music. Being a musician this is most important as to if I like a band or not.

What is the future for the extreme metal scene, as you see it?

It’s really hard to say. Back in 1984 I thought what I was hearing was the most extreme that it got, that it couldn’t get any heavier or extreme. I was wrong, dead wrong so who’s to say. Perhaps it will turn into more of a movement rooted not only in music but also in ideology or maybe it will become over saturated and stagnant eventually leading it back into obscurity again like some many other forms of art of the past.

What is the best thing about your music?

That it’s a release of emotions, thoughts or ideals into something that will hopefully inspire or spark the same in others and allows us to channel our energy into a tangible form.

Finally, please add anything else you would like to say.
