Interviewed by Martín & answered by Xaphan
How was the first days of the band, how do you form it?
This band in a way started out with just myself in the summer of 98. I met up with Xul about 8 months later. He had been doing a one-man project as well and we were both at the stage of wanting to form an actual band. We decided to keep the name I had been using which was Azazel. We then found a drummer and started rehearsing songs that would end up being our first self-released mCD titled "Order of the Fly." Since then Genocide Music released the Kult ov Azazel/Krieg split and then Arctic Music released our newest CD "Triumph of Fire."
Why do you change your name Azazel to Kult Ov Azazel, now do you consider your band a cult, why do you try to transmit with your name?
The name change came about because we were sick of being confused with other bands that had the same name. We decided we needed a name that signified us and opted to add to the name rather than start all over again trying to establish a new one. Yes, I see our band as a cult because by definition a cult is intense devotion to a person, ideal, or thing. Azazel in demonology and other mythical religions has always been connected to the ideals of war, rebellion, nonconformity, and so on. We are the cult that continues pushing these ideals through our music and our philosophy.
What about your last release, are you totally satisfied with it, why do you sign a deal with Blood Fire Death Rcds, now are you still with them, with what label you never sign a deal and why?
Our newest release is our full-length album titled "Triumph of Fire" which was released on the label we signed with last year, which is Arctic Music. It's 11 songs and tracks in just a little less than 40 minutes. It's been getting killer reviews and I can say that I am very pleased with the way it came out. I think it's our best material to date and truly represents what we as a band are all about. As for Blood Fire Death reissuing our first CD, it was only a one time thing. We never signed a contract with them. So at this point all future releases will be done through Arctic Music.
How do you see the your actual American black metal scene?
The scene here is ok. It's nothing great and I don't pretend that it is. There are a hand full of bands that are really great and hold true the principals and ideology that black metal entails. On the other hand there's the bands that suck and want to be part of the "scene" so bad that they spend more time obsessing and crying about the ones that have shown their capable of playing this form of music with conviction. So what we have here is called jealousy and self-denial. If these faggots stopped spending all their time trying to defame a band and put that energy into maybe perfecting their instrument then they wouldn't have anything to cry about. You can throw a temper tantrum all you want but crying isn't going to get you anywhere. The fact is this, the cream rises to the top and all that falls beneath it is just a complete waste. There are a lot of bands here that can't even make it off the bottom. But for those that want to hear some great bands coming from here you might want to check out Ibex Throne, Vykolakos, Cult of Daath, Infernal Hatred, Sumeria, Abazagorath, Open Grave, Humanicide, Thornspawn, Krieg, Averse Sefira, and Vukodlak.
What do you think about the worldwide scene, do you think that exist a lot of trendies and posers, why?
I think trendies and posers exist in every scene to be quite honest with you. Being trendy is an inherited trait in all societies today. But yes I do think there are a lot of people that infect this scene with trendiness. You see it here and I'm sure you see it in Peru as well. As for the worldwide scene, it has its moments. There hasn't been anything recently that I can honestly say has impressed me, well at least none that I can think of right now. Currently I have been listening to older shit like the first Destruction "Sentence of Death" and "Infernal Overkill", Celtic Frost "To Mega Therion", Darkthrone "Under a Funeral Moon", Belphegor "The Last Supper" and Beherit "Drawing Down the Moon."
Are you Satanist, pagan, how can you define yourself today?
I am a Satanist. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. This has been a philosophy I have had strong ties to since I was young and to this day live my life by its philosophy.
What do you know of Peru or South America?
I know that Peru was not only the birthplace of the Inca, the powerful civilization that ruled 9 million people in the 15th century; it was also the heart of Spanish colonial power in South America for 200 years. Your total area is 1,285,220 square kilometers (496,226 square miles) with a population of 23,800,000. Peru is made up of 45 percent Native American; 37 percent Mestizo; 15 percent European; 3 percent black, Japanese, Chinese. Your religious composition is 95 percent Roman Catholic; 5 percent other. Your current is 220 volts AC, 60Hz. Flat, two-pin, American-type plugs are standard. Visitors are allowed to import, duty-free, 400 cigarettes, 50 cigars, or 250 grams of tobacco; 3 liters of spirits; a reasonable amount of perfume for personal use; and gifts to the value of US$200. The export of archaeological and colonial art without special permission is prohibited. And when in Lima, dial 105 for police, 116 in case of fire. That's all I really know about Peru.
Have you a goal with Kult Ov Azazel and Black Metal, or is it only music for you?
The goal with Kult ov Azazel is to spread antichristian propaganda and to keep playing black metal as it should be played. That's the 2 main goals of this band. Has been since the day we formed and will continue to be as long as this band continues to exist.
Will you use a female voice in your music, why, why do you think about the bands that use it?
Now why would we do that? The form of black metal that we play is uncompromising, fast, brutal and raw so you tell me where a female vocalist would have a place in this band? I don't give a fuck if a band incorporates female vocals into their music. I personally don't get off on listening to black metal with female vocals but that's my preference. Let other people do whatever they want with their bands but when it comes to us you'll never have to worry about female vocals or keyboards. We will always walk the path of the old ways.
Do you have any interest in politic, to you who is Bush?
None whatsoever. I don't vote or have any political ties or interest. The day I vote will be the day that someone of antichristian values runs for office.
Any future plan?
We'll be putting out a live CD that will include 2 new studio tracks by the beginning of 2002. Soon after that in the summer we'll release our next offering and then more than likely you will see us doing some touring.
Any last comment?
Thanks for the interview. Check out the new CD "Triumph of Fire" if you have not done so. We are looking for distributors to work with in South America in carrying all future as well as past releases. Our campaign of blasphemy shall crush all those that oppose! Hail Victory!
