Interviewed by Lord Zaebos & answered by Xaphan

Hi Xaphan!. A pleasure to talk with you. How are thing in the KOA camp?

The pleasure is mutual. We haven’t been very active since the recording. We played a t about 3 weeks ago that’s about it. At the moment things are quite calm and will remain so until we begin rehearsing for an east coast tour in August.

The World, The Flesh & The Devil is your new album. Congratulations for the killer work. And it marks the first release of VJS with the band. How has it affected to the new album?. How has been his contribution to the new cd?

Your comments on the new release are much appreciated. This is indeed the first time those are hearing VJS on a Kult ov Azazel release. His contribution outside of playing guitar on the new one would be the lyrics to the song “Trampling the Cross.”

The World, The Flesh & The Devil is your 5th studio album. There has been an evolution from Triumph of Fire, Oculus Infernum and now this new album. Is this the way of Kult Ov Azazel for the future new releases?

I would say so. With every album there has been a musical progression without sacrificing the raw aspect of our sound. I would hope we continue to progress instead of regressing or becoming a band that continues to repeat itself.

The World, The Flesh & The Devil has been mastered by Eric Rutan. How has it affect to the final result of the new album?

Other than putting his evil touch on the final mixdown none whatsoever.

The World, The Flesh & The Devil is an album of intense Black Metal with parts more atmospheric, all without keyboards…how has been the composition of the new album?

All in all it took about a year and a half in writing it. I started writing riffs as soon as we were done recording “Oculus Infernum” and once there were enough for a few songs Hammer would come down to Florida and we’d work on arranging these into songs and drum patterns. Then before Hammer would leave Florida we would record drums and guitar using a Tascam 414MKII and a laptop using Adobe Audition. I then took everything home dumped them into my computer giving me the ability to slice and cut songs up and arrange them in any order I deemed or in some instances would cut riffs completely out. Once the song was arranged to every ones liking both VJS and myself laid guitars down and then Xul put down the bass tracks. After we had all the music demo’d out I began writing lyrics and laid down all the vocals. This was then given to everyone to listen to over our down periods for reference. Now as for the actual recording, mixing and mastering of the album, it only two weeks and pretty much done in the same fashion described earlier. It was all tracked as opposed to playing it live though. First the drums got laid down, then my guitar. After that VJS did his guitar tracks and then we both laid down the guitar harmonies. Xul then put the bass tracks down and then all vocals tracks are the last to be recorded. This is the studio formula we always follow.

Another very interesting thing is the lyrics. Reading the booklet I am very impressed by the work in this area. Tell us about the lyrics in the new album…

The lyrics deal with the title of the album. Some are based around what is happening around us, some are about the demise of worldly flesh and others are praises to the dark force that resides within.

I have read that some of you are involved in the Church of Satan…is it true?

Yes.

Tell us about the cover’s art. There are some pictures from medieval times. Where did you get them?. Who has made the cover art?

All the woodcuts and paintings come from various books in my collection. The cover art was done by Nocturath, our former guitarist, who also did all layout and art on “Oculus Infernum.”

Another thing in the cover art. The World, The Flesh & The Devil: I can see the Devil, The Flesh and The World…but why a Sword?...and what are the words in the background(I think they say Noitatpmet Dtui …Esapsert….)?

The sword signifies death, that is why it plunged through the earth. And the answer about the background words on the cover lies within a song on the album. That’s all I will say. I let you in on something though. You are totally wrong in what you think it says.

The Glorification of Evil begins with a woman. What is the idea behind this?. What does she say?

It’s a sample taken from Alucarda. It’s two women saying “Satan, Satan, Satan our Lord and Master. I acknowledge thee as my God and Prince”. We choose to use this certain sample because it fits with what the song is and the movie rules.

What about touring Spain?...are you going to come to my country?

Currently there are no plans.

Well Xaphan. This has been all. Thanks a lot for your time, and congratulations again for the killer album…last lines for Spanish fans!!
