Being from America and knowing that Black Metal started exclusively in Europe do European bands still segregate and judge American Black Metal? And being American, do you ever feel like adding anything distinctly American to your music?
Bottom line is black metal is not about heritage, geographic location or what climate you live in. This is what people everywhere need to wake up and realize. If certain people want to write something off because it is from America so be it, fuck them as it is their loss. As for our music I believe our brutal approach to our music is distinctly American.
Your music very Dark Funeral meets I guess, Marduk, is this just the way you write or do you try to capture the Norwegian/Swedish Necro sound, or does the pure evil just come naturally?
Everything we have ever written has come naturally and from within. We have never set out to sound like either of the two bands you mention. Just because there are a few similarities such as speed, blast beats and minor chords, this does not make us a clone of the Scandinavian sound.
A lot of Black Metal has been doing the Symphonic Black Metal thing, do you guys ever want to include that element, or do you have no interest in this form of Black Metal? What are your thoughts on Symphonic Black Metal?
We will never use any elements found in symphonic black metal. I find most of this stuff to be too girly but there are maybe a few that I find worth the time.
Are you strictly Black Metallers or do you enjoy Death or Thrash Metal? We've noticed that a lot of Black Metallers are strictly BM and will not admit that they listen to or even write anything other than BM, like for example, Samoth has been quoted that one of his all-time favorite songs is "I Want To Be Somebody" by W.A.S.P. (haha nice!)
All of us listen to many forms of music. I myself listen to more of the stuff I grew up on rather than current music this being extreme metal of the 80’s. Possessed, Venom, Sodom, Destruction, Bathory and so on. You and the readers get the idea.
Do you guys ever get any shit for your blasphemous merchandise or anything from religious queers?
Nope.
How is the American Black Metal scene doing in your opinion right now? A lot of people think that American Black Metal wont last, anything you’d like to say to those nay-sayers?
We’ve been doing it over 8 years and there’s no plan to quit. I think people that make these kinds of statements are either young and have no knowledge or are just straight up retarded. On the “scene” I have never known a scene other than it being used as a description for the musical style of a genre in America. We ask no acceptance of any scene so not a real concern of mine.
Ever thought about creating an American Black Circle and doing a little church burning? We do all the time!
Hypothetically speaking if I were going to commit a crime or crimes I wouldn’t do it with other people nor would I admit to such in an interview. Thoughts, yes but I can say I have never thought about forming any circle. I’m more of a loner than a group person.
On the note of hating religious idiots...what do you feel about the American Left Wings making excuses for Islam and everything they do, down playing everything and letting them get away with their shit, when in reality, that religion is worse than Christianity and needs to be destroyed. We feel as much as we hate Christianity, we live in a Christian society, what do you feel about the threat of this and the threat of Islam itself?
All Abrahamic religions should be erased from the planet but out of the Judaism, Christianity and Islam the biggest threat to all of mankind at the moment. I agree with you there. What we are seeing within Islam is a religious war for dominance and power. It’s technically equivalent to the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church starting a war to bring about the prophecies foretold in their bible. This is what we see among the sheep of Islam. We currently sit in the midst of a third world war being fought for religious supremacy. Sit back and enjoy the show.
Personally, what do you feel about religion in politics?
Both should be wiped away from human conscious.
Would you consider yourselves LaVeyan Satanists or old world Satanists?
Some in this band do not consider themselves Satanist; a more fitting description would be they are antichristian. I however am. If a description had to apply it would be Modern.
What do you think of what has become of the Church of Satan as of late? We personally feel that Rose is a disgrace to the church of Satan since Anton has passed away.
Honestly couldn’t say as I my contact or knowledge on current events has been limited since LaVey’s death.
Christianity is on the rise, we feel that we have a certain gleam of hope that Satanism will therefore be on the rise also, where Christianity is Satan follows, their cross casts a long shadow....would you agree or disagree? Why or why not?
I am of the belief that it is on a decline. Many of the younger youth are apathetic or disinterested in religion. It’s only the old timers; those of the baby boom generation and maybe some of generation X that still hold a firm grip on their beliefs. I can definitely say that Christianity does not have the same hold on America as it did when I was younger say in the 1970’s and 1980’s.
Alright enough of that religion and politics garbage, we just have to know........are there any Black Metal and Death Metal groupies out there for the next generation of Metal bands needing some "company" while on tour, or is that a thing of the past?
Can’t say we ever encountered any on our tours. Besides that, performing black metal in a live setting is about evoking, invoking and projection rather than picking up chicks for “company” or “good times”. The same goes for being in a black metal band in general but since you asked about the touring aspect I put it in that context.
So tell us some crazy show or road stories that you might have. What is the most disastrous show you have ever played?
Every road trip/tour has had its crazy moments; I don’t know where to begin. There’s been brawls with strangers, fights among members, whacked out/drugged out nights, bouts with alcohol poisoning, 17 hour straight drives, psycho tour managers, run ins with law enforcement, lots of desecrated bibles, rip off promoters/clubs, blood, vomit and detainment by Canadian customs all come to mind. Most disastrous show would be Pittsburgh, PA 2005.
Any plans on coming to California any time soon?
Not until we have the next album out. Once it is we’ll start booking both west and east coast dates.
Any news on new material, your latest offering kicks some fucking major ass!!
Thanks. New material is being written and we have been in pre-production mode since December. The title will be Destroying the Sacred. We plan to record sometime later this year.
What musicians, books, movies, art, etc.etc inspires you musically?
Too many to name as this is answer could turn into a book. I’ll just narrow things down here a bit. For literature it is books involving the occult and philosophy. Movies would be of the horror genre. Can’t say I have been inspired musically by art. Band wise it is Venom, Possessed, Hellhammer/Celtic Frost, Sodom, Darkthrone, Gorgoroth, Beherit and Profanatica.
Are fans over in Europe as glad to have you guys in their cd collection as we are?
We get a lot of email/mail from Europe so I would guess so. Can’t say I ever asked this question though.
Alright well that is the last of the batch we have for you, we would like to thank you for your time and wish you good luck on all of your future endeavors, and is there anything that you’d like to personally say to your fans out there?
Those unfamiliar with the band can find more information at www.kultovazazel.com or www.myspace.com/kultovazazel. Hails for the interview as well as to all those that have supported to us over the years! Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam!
