Interviewed by Eduardo
Greetings Xaphan, come Kult Ov Azazel. Do tell us a little about your history and your ideology?
Kult ov Azazel was formed in the spring equinox of 1999 under the infernal name Azazel consisting of Xaphan (myself) on guitar/vocals, Xul on vocals/bass and Von on drums. Under this name and lineup we recorded and released “Order of the Fly”. Soon after Von was kicked out and Hellspawn took over drum duties and with this lineup we recorded and released the material on the split CD with Krieg (USA). In the spring of 2000 we kicked out Hellspawn, decided to change the band name to Kult ov Azazel and soon after signed a 4 album deal with Arctic Music. In March 2001 we released our first full length “Triumph of Fire” with Vetis participating as a session drummer on that release. We have also participated in a 7” split with Satan’s Blood (GER); a 4 way split with Obitus (SWE), Humanicide (USA) and Thylord (FRA) and have been included on numerous compilations. In 2003 we launched our second major offensive for Arctic Music titled “Oculus Infernum” which is the first time we have recorded with a full permanent lineup which now consists of myself (vocals/guitar), Xul (vocals/ bass), Nocturath (guitar/backing vocals) and The Hammer (drums). Currently we are working on a new album titled “The World, The Flesh & The Devil”. Our first and foremost goal has always been to stay true to ourselves musically and create music that we feel a connection to. This is our vehicle for spreading misery, suffering and our contribution to the destruction of monotheistic ideas through musical violence.
You threw a Demo and a Mcd under the name of Azazel. Why did the band decide to add "Kult Ov"?
The reason was we wanted to establish ourselves as an identifiable entity. We learned that there had been bands before us and bands that were still active at the time we formed who used the name Azazel. We didn’t want others confusing us with any other band so we added to the name rather than change it completely.
The band in your beginning, participated of two compilations with other North American bands. Did that in fact help to impel the band for the world scenery?
It got our name and music out there to probably many that otherwise wouldn’t have heard us.
Last year, you relançaram "Order of the Fly" in Lp, with limited circulation in 666 copies and with two strips bonus. The live two, and one of them is "Chainsaw Gutsfuck" of the Mayhem. Is it of habit of the band to play music of great bands, or did it just go to that album?
We originally recorded it for a Mayhem tribute that was to consist of all American bands but this never got released by a label I won’t mention. So we ended up incorporating it into our live set since we were playing live a lot. We have since then recorded and covered others songs by Beherit and Hellhammer but I wouldn’t go so far as to say that it’s a habit we have. It’s more like honoring the bands that have inspired us.
Kult Ov Azazel, began with you and Xul, later they entered Hammer and Nocturath. Can you say that that formation is the ideal formation?
I can. This is by far the strongest this band has ever been. Adding both of them has brought more hate and intensity to the band than Xul and I could have imagined.
Kult Ov Azazel, has as your characteristic, speed and fury in your music. Which is the inspiration of the band?
We all have different musical inspirations so I can’t speak for the others. The ones off the top of my head are Venom, Destruction, Exodus, Hellhammer and Celtic Frost, Sodom, Beherit, Darkthrone, Gorgoroth and Mayhem. There’s many others I am forgetting and more that probably have just as much inspiration but I have been listening to metal for over 23 years so naming all of them would take days and much more thought than what we have time for here.
Is the band still in popularization of great "Oculus Infernum". But do you plan to still throw something this year?
We are currently writing a new album that will be titled “The World, The Flesh & The Devil” which we plan to record later this year. We’ll also be doing a 7” split with Krieg during 2004 as well.
Which your opinion in relation to scene of U.S.A? are there bands that deserve they be mentioned?
There are many that deserve it and even more who don’t. I will let your readers discover these for themselves.
What do you, in matter have hearing lately?
Xasthur “Funeral of Being”, “Casting Eternal Fires Vol. 1” compilation, and Revenge “Triumph, Genocide, Antichrist” are the most recent.
Do you know the scene of Brazil? Which bands do you know? Possibilities of you has play here?
Yes I know of the scene in Brazil as I was just there back in September running sound for Malevolent Creation’s Brazilian tour. Though I can’t say I know of many bands from there I can say that the metal scene in Brazil is by far one of the sickest I have seen ever, it makes many of the places in Europe seem like a girl scout gathering. The bands I know of are Sarcofago, Sextrash, Darkest Hate, Dark Celebration, Grave Desecrator, Endless War, Krisiun and Cultus Infame
