Interviewed by Miki & answered by Xaphan

Hail Xaphan, what's happening with you and Kult ov Azazel?

Activity wise not a whole lot is happening. We just played a show back on May 29th and until we start rehearsing again in August we're sort of taking a little break from things. Release wise the 10 inch split with Horn of Valere was released just recently and the 3rd full length on Arctic Music titled "The World, The Flesh & The Devil" will be released statewide on June 28th, 2005 and worldwide sometime in July.

First your bands name were Azazel and after some demo's you change it into Kult ov Azazel, why?

Too many bands using the name Azazel so we changed it to make sure that we would not be confused with any other band.

You are coming from Florida and you are black metal, so who inspired you to play that kind of music when it is known that Florida gives worlds best death metal bands?

What inspired me was Venom. I grew up in my youth listening to them and Hellhammer/Celtic Frost, Sodom, Destruction, Possessed, Onslaught, along with countless others. Venom was the band that started me down this path and many bands since then have and still continue to inspire me.

How is that you are playing guitar and the same way you are vocalist in the band, who was your inspiration to start playing guitar and did you had teacher or you were all alone by yourself?

As a kid Ace Frehley and then later Randy Rhodes where the ones that inspired me to play. When I started out I took lessons for about a month and then decided I didn't like what they were teaching me so I quit and from that day I have been self taught. Same with vocals, it wasn't until this band was started that I had to teach myself how to play and do vocals at the same time. We needed a vocalist and Xul and I decided that we'd do them ourselves instead of searching for someone.

Kult ov Azazel's latest album was "Oculus Infernum" and you have released it to Arctic Music and how did came to that cooperation, are you satisfied with their promotion of your band, with all organization?

Considering we are about to release our third album on Arctic Music I would say we have been very pleased with how things have been taken care of.

Who is lyrics writer in the band, its familiar that your lyrics deal with Satanism so what Satanism means to you, are all inspiration coming from HELL?

With the beginning releases it was mainly Xul writing the lyrics. On the new one and "Oculus Infernum" I started to contribute more of the lyrics. My lyrical inspirations have always been from occult and satanic writings, many different forms of philosophy from nihilism to anarchism and by the everyday happenings in the world.

Who did logo for the band?

It was done by Christophe Szpadjel and then was reworked by an artist that goes by Serpent.

Are you employed somewhere or all financials comes from music?

We have real jobs that pay the bills.

Have you released some video clips, if not have you ever thought to realize some and how it would locks like – maybe something like Belphegor's "Lucifer Incestus"?

I have that Belphegor release on vinyl so I'm guessing the CD version has CD-ROM enhanced video tracks which were included? If this is this case then yeah we'll be releasing something like this very soon on a split CD with Vrolok titled "Feast of Sacrilegious Impurity."

You re-released your demo "Order Of The Fly" once like spilt with Krieg and it were limited to 50 copies, is there any chance that you might re-release once again cause I am one of the thousand peoples that would like to have my own copies?

There's no plans to release this ever again. It's been released so many times in every format one can imagine over the years. So it's pretty much been laid to rest.

On second demo "Destruction To The Throne Of God" you played Mayhem's song "Chainsaw Gutsfuck" how did you got on idea to play that song cause all black metal bands who makes covers of Mayhem takes songs like Deathcrush, Freezing Moon, Funeral Fog?

To correct you it wasn't a demo. It was a promo tape titled "Of Evil and Hatred" and included those two songs on it. The Mayhem song was recorded actually for a tribute that went bust so we threw it on the promo tape as to not waste the recording. And the reason we choose to cover that particular song is for the simple fact that you just mentioned, it was a Mayhem song that hadn't been covered a million times over by every band on earth, plus a favorite of both Xul and myself.

I saw on the Internet that Kult Ov Azazel will play some live shows in USA and Canada, can you tell me something about that – which of the bands will support you on stage?

I think what you are referring to would be the tour we did on the West coast of the United States in 2004. We did this with Teratism, Sumeria and Scorched Earth. This year in August we'll be terrorizing the East coast of the United States with Blood Storm, Teratism and Horn of Valere.

When we can expect you here in Serbia, are you familiar with our scene?

Not familiar with any bands from Serbia to be perfectly honest. I also have no idea when we'll make it over to your country. No promoters or booking agencies have contacted us about doing any European tours in the entire 6 years of our existence so until we are invited over you have a better chance of seeing the Devil in Serbia than Kult ov Azazel.

Beside Kult Ov Azazel does any other band member have any other projects?

Yes but will remain unmentioned in this interview. This is not about them, it's about Kult ov Azazel.

What is your favorite concert that you were on, and can you recommend some metal bands that comes from Florida ?

At this point in time we have done so many shows they all run together so I can't say I have a favorite show out of all of them. The one that sticks out in my mind would be the show we did last November in San Francisco, California. That was one fucking sick, evil and bloody show!!!

What corpse paint means for you, cause more and more black metal bands are on stage with it?

Corpsepaint symbolizes death of the external, the transcending of the internal.

Do you watch horror films, which one is your favorite and did you in some cause watched "Salo or 120 days of Sodom" (movie is really sick ?)

I love horror movies, my top favorites are The Exorcist and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I have seen Salo many times. I wouldn't classify Salo as horror as it falls more under the genre of exploitation films. But yeah, that movie and Nekromantik were in heavy rotation in my VCR some 15 years ago. I have actually been trying to find Salo on DVD but it proves to be very hard to find and then when it is people want an arm and a leg for it.

Ok my brother this is the end for this interview salute your final words for people who read this zine..............................

We appreciate your support! Thanks also for allowing us space in Unholy Scrolls to further disseminate our blasphemies to the hordes of Serbia!!! Our website is located at www.kultovazazel.com for those that wish to gain more knowledge on the band. "The World, The Flesh & The Devil" will be unleashed in Europe in July so look for this, it's nine tracks of heretical doctrine composed of absolute hate!!!
